What Is Active FX and Total FX?
See table below for more details. Active FX laser is a fractionally ablative CO2 laser treatment which ablates (burns off) a fraction of the outer skin surface to induce a resurfacing response that is deeper and more intense than a chemical peel. It helps reduces wrinkles and fine lines, improves skin tone and texture, lightens brown spots, age spots, reverses sun damage, and stimulates new collagen production.
Total FX is a deeper procedure that combines the Deep FX laser treatment with the Active FX treatment. The Deep FX laser penetrates further into the dermal layers of the skin, enabling a fractionally ablative treatment that targets more severe textural problems, deep wrinkles, deeper acne scars, sun damage, and blotchiness. Combined with the Active FX laser the Total FX laser treatment yields maximum overall results. Remember to stop all Aspirin for 7 to 10 days, and Motrin/ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, fish oil, and Vitamin E for 4 days before your Total FX treatment to minimize excessive bleeding during your treatment.
What Can I Expect During an Active FX/Total FX Procedure?
A topical anesthetic is applied to the treatment area to minimize pain. Patients experience heat and some burning. The procedure lasts from 30 to 60 minutes. At the conclusion of the laser treatment, the patient’s skin will be red, weepy, and swollen. Active FX has 3 to 5 days of downtime and Total FX has 5 to 10 days of downtime. Downtime includes skin weeping of fluids the first 1 to 2 days with crusting/scabbing by days 3 to 5 and final healing by days 7 to 10. In about a week the patient’s skin shows the first signs of smoothness. The full results are apparent in 3 to 6 months and any lingering redness resolves by 6 to 8 weeks.
What Results Can Be Expected?
There will be an immediate tightening of the skin, with reduction of wrinkles, fine lines, pore size, age spots and other hyperpigmentation. Also, skin tone and texture will be improved. Most results are visible in the first few weeks, but new collagen stimulation continues for 3 to 6 months. Results from Active FX/Total FX laser treatments can last for years. Diligent sun protection and good skin care will significantly prolong the treatment results.
